When it comes to healthcare advocacy, sometimes it takes a group of dedicated individuals to spark change. This was the case when I initiated a meeting with the Moncton Caucus, the president of the Ostomy Society Moncton, and a Nurse who Specializes in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) from the Moncton City Hospital. Our goal was to seek financial support for ostomy supplies in New Brunswick. While our journey is far from over, our collective efforts are beginning to make a significant impact.

The Need for Financial Support

New Brunswick has always been a province known for its picturesque landscapes and friendly communities. However, when it comes to people with ostomies, the province lags behind in providing adequate financial support. As of our meeting, New Brunswick was the only province in Canada without financial subsidies for ostomy supplies. This is a significant issue considering the growing number of individuals living with ostomies in the province.

In Canada, there are approximately 135,000 ostomates, and New Brunswick is home to around 6,000 individuals who have undergone ostomy surgery. These surgeries are life-changing, and they require ongoing care and maintenance in the form of ostomy supplies. Unfortunately, the limited programs available in New Brunswick, such as social development and old age coverage, fall short of providing comprehensive support.

Our Presentation to the Moncton Caucus

The three of us, representing various aspects of the ostomy community, came together to present our case to the Moncton Caucus. Our primary goal was to request financial support for all ostomy supplies in New Brunswick, as we believe that every ostomy patient deserves access to these necessary supplies without financial burden. Our presentation highlighted the essential role of these supplies in maintaining the health and quality of life for people with ostomies.

This meeting with the Moncton Caucus demonstrates the power of collaboration and advocacy. Each of us brought a unique perspective to the table, validating the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to tackling complex healthcare issues.

The Promise of Progress

We were met with a promising response. They assured us that they would follow up with us, giving us hope that our efforts may lead to positive change. We eagerly await their response and are optimistic about the possibility of achieving 100% coverage for ostomy supplies from the government.

The journey toward comprehensive financial support for people with ostomies in New Brunswick is far from over, but we are committed to making a difference. Our advocacy efforts will continue, and we encourage others to join us in this important cause. Every individual living with an ostomy deserves access to the supplies they need to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
